NORC Impact Assessment: TFET Phase III
NORC at the University of Chicago was commissioned by IDP Foundation to evaluate the third phase of the Techniques for Effective Teaching (TFET) program. During prior phases I and II, the TFET program partnered with 127 private, low-fee primary schools across eight regions in Ghana to strengthen the capacity of early grade teachers to use child-friendly and inclusive teaching approaches. Phase III was the newest piloting phase of TFET supporting the use of pupil-centered techniques by faculty and student teachers within 46 Colleges of Education in Ghana. Many of TFET’s teaching techniques are applicable to instruction at any level.
As part of this Phase III series NORC delivered 4 reports evaluating the quality of TFET training implementation in Ghana’s Colleges of Education. Conclusions from Phase III research found TFET to be a timely and well-positioned professional development program supporting the on-going work of tutors in implementing the new B.Ed. curriculum, which promotes similar kinds of pupil-centered methods. Moreover, lesson observations of college tutors at eight colleges showed most tutors used a combination of teacher-centered and pupil-centered methods during B.Ed. courses with student teachers.
